Proofreading or Copyediting

To the layman, proofreading and copyediting may seem like the same thing. But those working in the publishing industry know better. True, their common goal is to come out with an accurate and error-free document. However, there are intricacies that distinguish one from the other.

It should be stressed, first of all, that copyediting and proofreading are separate stages in the revision/correction process. Okay, so which of the two is done first?

The answer is copyediting. In this stage of the editorial process, copy editors go through the manuscript line by line. They check for grammatical errors and make sure that punctuation, spelling, capitalization, word usage, syntax, and other issues are in accordance to primary references.

Copy editors also check for minor to average factual errors. Further, to remove confusion and improve readability, they supply recommended recasts. To do away with verbosity and redundancy, unnecessary words or phrases are omitted. Copy editors also cross-check the main text with the table of contents, documentation, and other data for overall uniformity.
